~ I See A Double Standard Here ~

Let’s try to break this down and cite examples about the mainstream media’s (MSM) take on famous sports and political figures (and the not so famous and not so mainstream) who show their public display of affection that circle around their Christian faith with no ounce of hesitation (at least some of them).

We will see in the following instances how the media respond differently and apply different sets of principles for similar situations, and how these standards applied more leniently to one group than to another.

Are you sensing where I’m going? Yes, my observation on the MSM’s treatment on Tim Tebow!

Victor Cruz, New York Giants wide receiver, who had a phenomenal year with 82 catches this year, finished 3rd in the league in yards compared to zero last year. One notable play he had was his 99 yard TD catch versus New York Jets on December 24th, 2011. When asked how to describe his skill, here’s his answer:

“ I guess it is just God-given ability. When I get the ball in my hands I try to make the most out of every play. I try to make the maximum yardage I can get every time I touch the ball. God’s blessed me with some ability to do some good things and to be able jump and run and run good routes. It’s a testament to God.”

(BTW, that’s a whopping four references to GOD in just less than one minute–a rare occasion to occur on national TV in this kind of environment that is mostly leaning toward secular, the-no-mention-of-God-mantra. I’m surprised Cruz was allowed to stay on air without being cut-off).

Boxer Manny Pacquiao, WBO eight-division world champion and rated as the best pound for pound in the world, prays before, during and immediately after each fight: he wears his rosary/prayer beads every fight, he makes the sign of the cross before each round, and kneels in his corner before and after each fight whether it was a night of victory or a night of defeat.

Edson Barboza from Brazil who had a knockout (KO) win against Terry Etim from the UK at the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) last January 15, 2012 what many already claiming the most spectacular knockout in UFC history. After the knockout, Barboza gives his little “shout out to God” by pointing towards the sky, then he pounds his chest and carries on like most professional athletes these days. You see many professional NFL players do the same— point towards the sky and then dance around.

Tim Tebow, Denver Broncos quarterback, and he does this:

Why the fuss on Tim Tebow? Why such a controversy?; (and to say it’s a fascination would be an enormous overstatement by MSM’s standards). Why does the MSM not get worked up over the other guys’ religiosity like they do with Tebow? Is it because he embodies something real and rare in the mainstream? Perhaps it has something to do with the media’s lapsed perception of the old proverb “walk the talk,” that when they found out that this pro-Jesus and pro-life young man actually goes on missionary trips, and is outspoken about his stance on abortion, and when they see that his religiosity is not a game and it’s the real deal Christianity centered on a real deal Christ, they get ticked off… then they resort to other areas undermining his moral landscape, his QB skills or maybe hop into the PC wagon and create a PC issue that does not exist.

Lastly, during the last presidential election, President Obama stood in front of the microphone, and claimed that he was a born-again Christian, proclaiming Jesus as his Lord and Savior. Once again, the MSM never squeaked a single word over it but they went gaga and full stream attack on pro-life Sarah Palin with a Down Syndrome child.
